The Captain

well we called him the captain it suited him well
he never seemed to mind it as far as I could tell
he sailed through our waters with a true and loving hand
and his crew we knew we were always headed for land

captain….
yeah we called him the captain

selling bibles on the street out in the texas summer sun
my daddy he had plans on becoming someone
hitched west to stay down waco way, a baylor boy to be
and set his sails on the sea to one day be

the captain…
one day, our captain

he always was the captain of our ship
led us well at the helm with a steady grip
and he never really shook that southern drawl
perhaps he never tried to much at all

well his studying ways took his nights and his days
to the city that never sleeps
he saw mickey play ball in the thrill of the fall
with his buddies in the bleacher seats
reaching for stars and passing the bars, a law man soon to be
those texas eyes surely wide with all to see
well every captain needs his lady and so the story goes
my daddy met his lady, swept that lady off her toes
wrote home with pride he’d found his bride to be
and soon we’d sail along, my sister my brother and me

with the captain…
alongside the captain

well my daddy died on the fifth of july just moments from the dawn
he left that day but it’s safe to say he’s never really gone
I feel him in the ocean air, through whispers on the sea
setting sail now and forever to always be

the captain…
yeah to be the captain
the captain…
yeah we called him the captain
the captain…
he’ll always be the captain
